Yo. It's time for my yearly 'Possibly somewhat useful' post. Expect nothing coherent from me for the rest of the year.

Just wanted to touch bases with people for a bit on the subject of Fullbringing, and the causes thereof. With Chad's explanation of how 'pride' figured into his supposed awakening as a Fullbringer, I noticed a lot of people were looking at Ichigo's level ding and going 'Hey wait where does pride fit into this?' Short answer? It probably doesn't.

Click here for a shocking lack of swearing )

Short theory: A powerful impulse, experience or emotion tied to a physical object are the catalysts for Fullbring.

Something you'd like to add? Fullbring the soul of the comment box and manifest your powers unto me.

Well, I'm still in the process of translating Ishida's pages - though for now they don't seem to be particularly interesting, just a brief recap. *sighs*

In the meantime, here, have some more of Kubo's interview! :D )

Yo.

MSN consensus has it that I should repost to this comm my 'How the **** did Rukia get that ****ing Hougyoku' thread that I started way back in 2007 and which has persisted to this day. It stands as my lone worthwhile contribution to Bleach 'fandom' and as a result I am quite proud of it. Other than that time I pointed out Ju-Ni's translators totally screwed up Matsumoto's conversation to Orihime in the manga that one time and got crazy psycho hate mail for it. BUT ANYWAY

Please to enjoy its fine high-quality and post any observations or pages of manga and/or dialogue you might have which are pertinent to the subject.

Got a message from today from czeliate
hihi debbie..according to the raw in bleach 396.
Aizen says: just as I expected..

not
just as I planned

cheers

The Sleepyfans translation at OneManga is out and uses this translation of what Aizen said.

Binktopia, who translates currently for mangastream, is given to making these sorts of jokes. I'll never forgive them for the line they gave Ishida as Nemu's boobs were about to smother him. Ishida really said "Too close! Too close!" and they translated the line as "Why am I suddenly craving dairy?"

Some people really like Binktopia's jokes and Westernized translations and added ... um... flourishes to the original text, but I'm not one of them. They've sent fandom into circles before--when Urahara opened the garganta for Chad, Ishida, and Ichigo at the beginning of this arc, Binktopia translated the scenario as one where Urahara was going to join the boys on the journey. There were lots of disappointed fans when the real translations came out.

In this case, maybe some of those Aizen introduced Masaki to Isshin mad theories can be put to rest. I've heard some crazy speculation--such as Aizen manipulating Rukia to make her carry the guilt of Kaien (even though these events took place before Ichigo's birth). People were getting a little out of control. And those in fandom who were moaning about the ultimate troll being unbelievable (most of us here at bleachness didn't believe Aizen or Binktopia's line), chillax already?

eta: to murk the waters, CNET is using the "planned" word: Aizen: So this... // ...is your reiatsu. // Splendid. // You have grown well. // Just as... // ...I always planned.

czel explains how the word can't be planned here

Have fun, fandom. I knew you'd go insane with speculation. But there's just no way that Aizen is writing Kubo's story. He's the villain, not the protagonist. He's not Light Yagami. He's using the purdy words on you as well as Ichigo and I dislike watching you both squirm.

Debbie gave me permission to post my translations of some of Kubo's tweets. I follow him on Twitter. Really, he's quite a funny guy, but he tweets a lot. So, I cut out a lot of his tweets and translated mostly those which pertained to Bleach. And those being the most recent tweets (as in yesterday and today). I did add some random tweets as well, just not the memes and some of the conversations about movies, food, and the like. They're ordered from the top being the most recent and the rest being earlier tweets. Enjoy.

Obligatory Disclaimer: The translations are mine, so any errors are my responsibility and I apologize in advance for them. You may post this where you like, but please credit me, so the people with pitchforks at least have the correct address to voice their complaints about inaccuracy.

For those of you interested, but who haven't seen any translations yet, I'm putting the translation I did here, you can also find it at my LJ here: http://lennan.livejournal.com/53557.html

So it turned out the crazy spoilers from Bleach Asylum were correct. Does this make it a case of fact is stranger than fiction?

Disclaimer: This is an unauthorized Fan Translation and may contain inaccuracies. I did this to the best of my abilities and apologize for any mistakes. Thanks.

Since I realized you're not allowed to argue linguistic semantics in a language you don't understand because it was a sign of desperation. Fine, I'll argue linguistic semantics in a language I DO understand. And the language being the original language Bleach is written in. Yes, Japanese. Because indeed, somethings do get lost in translation.

For the ones who don't know what the fuss was about )

ETA: Guys, guys. I'm only telling the truth here. :cookiemonster: It's no reason to assume I'm trying to argue fervently against anything. Really. :elmo: The manga speaketh what it doth speak.

I don't know any more Japanese than course one of a Rosetta Stone software program and the Jimmi's Book of Hiragana I bought for my daughter when she was five.

I do have some experience as a professional translator in Hebrew and Spanish, and I believe I can make qualified judgements as to bullshit and what's much ado and what's a tempest in a teapot and what's fandom wank.

Repeat: I do not know Japanese.

But I do know translation wank when I see it.

Hello everyone! ^___^ Sorry for being late... I find out that translate something from a foreign language into another foreign language IS DIFFICULT XDDDD I hope you can forgive my horrible english and possible errors and enjoy this traslation of a very cute IshiHime doujinshi that Debbie posted some days ago ^__^

ROAD MARK translation ... cut to my journal

I love Kaya. [profile] bananakaya  , that is.

Please don't miss this week's entry of Oh Bleach Me!

And guess what I found out yesterday! Annie explained it all to me! Orihime has never been in the FIFTH TOWER. This Drake fellow who does the Thai translations of Bleach explained that Orihime has always been in the "FIVE TOWERS" just as in the chapter title of this week.
So the chapter did refer to a geographical location and sorry Neha, there go our dreams for those columns representing a crash landing by a certain Quincy with a flair for dramatic entrances.

Great Kami, shippers, lighten up! I think I caught the word jihad being used in the shipwars this weekend. Have some funnies.

Mezzo is always good for some funnies.( For those of you who don't know, there was some wank over the word "reunion" in Rukia's "Save the reunion for later" line in 317. First, it was claimed to not exist in the more accurate translation; then when it was proved to exist in the raw, it was claimed that Rukia was referring to a reunion of friends, not to a reunion of her and Ichigo, specifically.... elsewhere someone was measuring how wide Ichigo's mouth was in the panel where he saw Rukia in order to prove that it was the same expression of joy as when he saw Chad).

The eyeball sex *blow on nails and rubs them on collar*, a term coined by MOI in the UlquiHime FanClub not long ago, belonged to Ulquiorra and Orihime in this chapter, though. Ulqui almost got to second base!

Kaya ([profile] bananakaya) has hilarious Bleach entry this week.

Check out Kaya's silliness

Brief mod note:  I recently purged a bunch of random posts with links to YouTube and ff.net because one had a wrong link and the others seemed random. If you post a link to something bleachy, please make sure it's something special that readers may not have been able to find easily.  Please repost if you think the stories are worthwhile--I was click-happy when deleting and took out a whole row of posts the way Renji took out Exequias.

Manga-Rain is the slowest translator of Bleach but the best and I fault myself for not always reading their scanlations or even downloading them. I missed something important! Ju-ni is my favorite translator because of their purported accuracy, non-stilted style, and promptness, but.....THEY MADE A BIG BOO-BOO IN CHAPTER 199!

A friend who is a Crusader for Accurate Translation alerted me to the error and then posted this in BA:

Matsumoto, contrary to popular belief, NEVER said that Orihime and Ichigo HAVE A BOND

Ju-nI, to their credit, has leapt to say that this translator is now gone and that the current translator will repair this error and others.
Me, I'm just beating myself up because I never read the correct translation and in discussions always acquiesced to the idea that this chapter was a prognosticator of Orihime's becoming more and more important to Ichigo in future chapters--because Matsumoto, who must know SOMETHING, said so. I remember that when I first read the scene, I thought that I was being HUGELY biased by first thinking that Matsumoto MUST be lying to just be kind to Orihime (I knew that Rukia was more impt to Ichigo, that Mats knew this, that her coddling Hime with this stuff about Orihime's "bond" with Ichigo--apparently made up out of the blue by translator--seemed out of keeping with Mats' bold, upfront character).

Then I went along with the popular idea that Mats was telling Hime that all of Ichigo's friends were important to him and that she would be too.

KLUNK!  The truth is better. The truth has Matsumoto saying "At least you're tackling it and dealing with it on your own.  Don't you know? It's always easier to simply run away from your problems. You've tackled your feelings instead of running away. That's already very admirable, Orihime."  Way to go, Mats!  Not a word about how Orihime is worthy because she's worthy to Ichigo. The pep talk gives a thumbs up to Orihime for acknowledging her own jealousy of Rukia. Brava, Matsumoto.

Boo translators who make shit up.  Yey Kubo for such a rocking FEMINIST moment.

EDIT:
more on the BA thread Because people will start ship crap even when there's nothing to cry about (see the translation in the first response to this post or Cezaria's translation in the BA thread), let me CLARIFY that there is a previous page to this page in which Matsumoto says that Ichigo NEEDS "you and Kuchiki." That is not in dispute. The Ju-Ni translation on the next page doesn't even mention Ichigo, or Inoue's "bond" to Ichigo or Inoue's "uniqueness."

I translate. I've translated letters, poetry, simple text. My languages are Spanish and Hebrew. Translation is a skill and an art, and I'm no accomplished translator but one thing I've always believed was that some translations are more precise than others.  From an academic perspective, a correct translation is a translation with no errors. One does not translate "cow" as "giraffe." Semantics is another issue. Can you translate "farm animal" in one language to "pig" in another language? Here's where looking at context is necessary. Here's where people start debating. Great. Good. Fun!

Debates about translation tend to be big (and ugly) in academia because of all these scholarly articles written in various languages and different writers trying to justify this thesis or that one in order to get publication and attention. Also in academia, there's the whole "post-modern deconstructionist" issue in which the po-mo's tend to flatten most opinions/art/products/behaviors/translations into one being as good as the next.

Excuse me while I gag. Oh yes, you po-mo's , of course quality is subjective and relative, but please, please why can't you see what most people see (and what is increasingly becoming accepted in acade
mia as "a valid theory" haha); namely, that some interpretations/translations/English papers/pianists/race car drivers are better than others.

That's really all I want to say about the current Bleach translation to-do.
