First some recent goodies from Jump Bang, the Tokyo t.v. show that features Jump stuffs. From baidu screencaps, posted gratis of Annie and Delicious at deathberry. Under the cut are the covers (in color now) of the new Bleach novels by Ryohgo Narita (unidentified new characters but possibly a previous Kenpachi and a lady person from Shunsui's past), the color cover for Bleach volume 55 (Bucky and some very large font), and Rebooted Souls (Ichigo). Also, a drawing of a very grown-up and badass Ichigo from Sensei.
The sketch from Sensei gives me all kinds of thrills. Kubo's art and Ichigo as a character have both grown so much in the past 10 yrs. Now the volume 55 cover. I don't know why Sensei was so excited about the style for this cover. I love Bucky and from this pic it looks like a nice scary portrait but nothing REALLY special--the huge freaking font annoys the FARK out of me, and while I see the double Quincy fives like two fists to the face, I get it already Sensei. I'd rather have art sometimes than his graphic posturing. This is the man who brings home his architecture magazines home and says he "purrs" over them but sometimes his style is too ... I don't know--at the expense of character? Like, I'd like to see a FACE rather than things?
Eh, I know he'll make up for it with the poem.
I'll get my characterization there. But I really don't like the big ass letters. I'm wondering if they're going to be in every volume cover from now on.
Goodies under cut

Second, I know that fandom is craving a translation in English of the fourth excerpt of the Bleach novel by Narita-san. There's one available at deathberry but it's being restricted to a closed subforum at the moment. I keep waiting for other translators to step up to the plate but so far its been days since the raw appeared and no one has translated anything but the summary. Apparently the DB fans who did so much of the work for fandom for years finding goodies and doing translations are truly the only ones who bother--despite recent claims to the contrary.
In fact, not long ago, deathberry translator
pikeish (who previously provided for Bleach Asylum and all fandom with goodies via the IchiRuki FC before its break w/BA to form deathberry) stood accused of stealing a translation from Bleach Asylum despite hard evidence that her translation appeared days before BA's translation. Amazing fandom story. I know I've vowed to stick to source material and the Bleach MANGA in my posts but this fandom story is really too amazing not to mention. I've got such a personal stake in it too and it doesn't involve shipping pettiness but the fandom at large. What the story appeared to be at first was that some newbie translator had paraphrased
pikeish's translation and reposted at BA to fanboi gratefulness and misunderstanding and much bitchiness towards the new forum who refused to share with BA. What eventually was revealed was that the administrator of BA, Velius, actually goaded this "translator" to go to to deathberry and take the translation, knowing full well that the translation posted at BA would not be authentic, original work. He then further goaded BA members to troll DB and suggest that
pikeish took the translation from BA!
The attempted sabotage of deathberry by BA administration was all out in the open on BA visitor messages, screen-capped and exposed at deathberry. The thread was closed but you can read the whole dramaz HERE. The caps are rather shocking. (Velius: [administrator of BA]: "I'm good with code" and blackstrawberry [the "translator"]: "The one with the actual goodies happens to be someone other than me"). The thread itself features a surprise appearance from Velius who advises deathberry to lock down its forum 100% ... to keep people from stealing from it, I suppose.
Well, for the time being, deathberry is partially locked down. Unlike Bleach Asylum, it does not make any money off ad revenue and was never intended to be a biiiig forum. We were always a community of fans; we love what we do and never regarded ourselves as a public service either. Those of you who are blaming the people who run deathberry for keeping the bleach novel translation and other goodies from you, please don't blame us. We were sharing with the fandom at large. It was antics like the one the BA administration pulled that prompted the recent lock-down. People who work hard don't need wank and accusations. It's very unlikely that the new bleach novel will ever be (officially) translated into English--the previous ones were not. May this be a lesson to fandom. Entitlement and whining will get you nowhere. Want something very much? Do it for yourself.
ETA: Deathberry was considering releasing scanlations of novel to general public after some time so no further accusations of translation-theft etc could be made but decided to make only summaries public in a thread. See here

Date: 2012-05-27 10:33 pm (UTC)Honestly, that is fine with me. I perfectly understand the feeling.
Now, we've shared stuff openly before, and were shit on. I'm sorry but I'm not someone who's going to leave that matter like this.
Also, for your knowledge, no I'm not amused to have to validate people into the locked section; this shit takes time and time is something I already don't have. And I also have validated people with 0 to 10 posts because they have been convincing enough.
I also was the one who proposed to share after a while in the general public, but with your comments, you managed to repel our whole team from this - some like me even changed our decision.
Asking to not reshare is not asking to give your blood for DB and I'm not sure why you feel so entitled about this. Because seriously, if we didn't translate this, you would have never heard of it. Simply because we can do it, decided to do it - this is a LOT of work BTW - and got shit on when we were just working with the excerpts, suddenly we're the bad guys?
Sorry but your comments fly right above my head as I don't fucking care about people who can't add 1+1.

Date: 2012-05-27 11:25 pm (UTC)1) Point out to me one instance where I've gone crazy about art thieves. Seriously. Cautious, yes. Crazy? Not a chance. What I do understand is, when you post it online, it's going to be shared. Don't want it shared? Don't post it online.
2) I couldn't care less if this has changed your mind. That a simple discussion with one person can do so, is to me the sign of a bad administrator. As far as I'm concerned you can take your translation, your attitude, the way you look down on other fans, and you can keep it to yourself. Or do something more explicit with it. Fandom will manage fine, I'm sure.
3) I never once said that asking not to reshare wasn't a given. Not once. In fact, I said the opposite. I suggest you reread some things.
4) Hard as it is to believe, I have dug up Bleach things on my own, I was aware of the novel before coming across it on DB. But I know that might be hard for you to believe.
One last thing. This is a general statement on comments in this post but it's stuck with me. Saying DB keeps 'Bleach fandom afloat' is saying that every fan who isn't a part of DB does fuck all and contributes nothing to Bleach fandom as a whole. All the fics, the art, the general discussions, even the tumblr posts. They mean nothing. Obviously you guys exists in a vaccum and no one anywhere ever does Bleach things ever. It's hugely insulting to any Bleach fan.
And the dogpiling right here is why I don't bother posting to DB or Bleachness anymore. Heaven help a dissenting opinion.
Have a nice day.

Date: 2012-05-28 02:38 am (UTC)Bleach 'fandom' is pretty much fucking ruined already, and I'd have to say that the idea that everyone's opinions should be respected has a great deal to do with it.
I don't go to the salon to get opinions on my car's radiator.
tl;dr take a hefty dose of 'deal with it' and stop getting upset with what other people choose to do with their time.

Date: 2012-05-28 12:10 pm (UTC)Heaven help a dissenting opinion is right. It would've been nice if someone had come here to back you up, but from from what I can see Bleach fandom really doesn't give a shit about much anymore.
What you may have perceived as dogpiling here is just a matter of being one against a group of insiders. I'm just waking up right now but until Guildy showed up with the usual brutishness I found most comments to you to be acknowledging of your position and Vayshti answered your points thoughtfully--without the "tone" you objected to on DB. It's always useful in discourse to get to the actual argument and get rid of strawmen like "tone" or who's got the moral high ground or who's keeping Bleach fandom afloat (because this whole "elitist" thing is never going anywhere--it's like arguing an insult. "You're a dork" "No I'm not" "Yes you are" "No I'm not--YOU ARE").
If you want to see real dogpiling, go to somewhere like fandom_wank where the members are skilled at deliberately mocking posters. And my own comment directed at Velius (hmm, I believe he's changed his name to Beltias at BA now to hide in disgrace) in the linked thread at DB was a deliberate attempt at non-negotiation with a horrible administrator. But I tried to talk with you and so did other people.
I see that some didn't but as I said before, there's no fandom Valhalla where everyone is nice and polite and shares freely.
As Alex said above, none of this ever would've happened if people had respected the work of others, the conditions set by forums artists and translators and been gracious and thanked people for their hard work and not insulted peoples' English or accused people falsely of stealing but hey, no one is perfect--fandom is, and I will say it again and again, entitled . I will never expect it to be any less. It treats the manga-ka with insults, demands, and expectations weekly so of course it will treat its own fandom this way.
And yes, I understand why you haven't posted to bleachness or in fandom in years. I was surprised when you showed up. But thank you for your opinion. It just so happened that the DB scanlation staff was in the middle of a panel vote when it came out. It gave us much to talk about. I actually still support making the scans public but I'm not the one doing the translating neither am I the one who has been the most hurt by recent events. I have, however, seen lost of hurtful things in fandom--some of which is easily taken care of by shutting a few doors and closing a few windows on fandom involvement. And that's what DB fans who are currently at work on translating a massive 800 page novel want to do.
Fans will go on. We're like the heart in the cheesy song after all--we will go while everything sinks around us like the Titanic. Maybe I'll see you at the end of Bleach and after. Because, unlike Velius who casually wished people "have a nice life" whenever they disagreed with issues on his forum, I've actually grown to care about people I've met in fandom. Not the GENERAL FANDOM at large, just individual people. If that's elitism then call it that. I call it being human.

What about the poor fans that are being caught in the crossfire? Now those fans don't get to see your art that should be for all fandom? Are you not self entitling your your work just like those at DB?

This is *exactly* what the translators did because of how they were treated on Bleach Asylum by the admin. And then their treatment got WORSE because they didn't post it there.
Luckily, I don't think people are going to hound you and diss your work if you choose to keep it public on DeviantArt, and ask for it not to be shared on DeathBerry.
I'd like to think the members would respect your wish, and not think it's a free-for-all, that they wouldn't abuse your trust in keeping it public by posting it unattributed and/or shredding your work, and that they wouldn't accuse you of tracing/lifting from other artists.
