Sensei does tweet about things other than food and breasts--sometimes he tweets about Bleach. Just today (and I swear if I didn't know better I would guess that someone cued him in on the fact that a certain insistent part of American fandom was identifying Rukia as "a geisha" and Orihime as a "samurai's wife" in the new 2011 anime B calendar

ただ、俺が歴史に疎いせいか、ルキアと織姫の元ネタだけが誰だか分かりません。 about 3 hours ago via Echofon
来年のアニメ版カレンダーが届いたんだけど、これ凄くいい!!今までで一番好きかも。歴史上の人物に扮したキャラが筆のような筆致で描かれてて、みんなすげーかっこ良い! about 3 hours ago via Echofon
Several fans (mostly Japanese) wrote back to identify Rukia as princess AtsuHime (not a fancy prostitute) amd Orihime as Murasaki Shikibu, author of The Tale of Genji THE WORLD'S FIRST NOVEL (not an anonymous Samurai's wife). Of course those fans identifying the girls as such also claim to be doing such things in order to annoy the IchiRuki fandom. Mature, ne?
Also, remember when Sensei tweeted that he was drawing panties for the first time in his life and he got us all curious as to WHOSE panties they could be? (He said he wanted to make them flesh-colored!

Alas, he wasn't talking about Bleach. Translation by

Sensei: @hekky3 確かに子供用の水着って困りますよね。やちるの水着姿描いた時も困りました。そういや俺こないだ生まれて初 めてパンチラ描きましたよ。BLEACHじゃないですが(笑)。
To hekky3: "I definitely have some trouble with child swimsuits. I had some trouble when I drew Yachiru's swimsuit as well. By the way, the other day I drew someone showing their underwear for the first time in my life. Ah, but I'm not talking about Bleach." (laugh)
(Mezz: Awwwww, looks like he wasn't drawing IchiRuki pantsu after all. XD
I wonder what he was talking about, then...?
Lol, maybe he really IS starting a Kubo underwear line! XDDD)

This calendar is really awesome and if I had money I would buy it. ;_;
Rukia looks gorgeous as a princess (she has longer hair there doesn't she? x3) and Orihime being Murasaki is such a tremendous honor and matches well because of her wild imagination. (not to mention she looks beautiful <33)
Other than pure bitterness and/or spite, I can't begin to comprehend why some people would insist that the girls are something else when they have been given proof after proof of who they are supposed to represent.
Oh fandom. *shakes head*

Date: 2010-10-28 03:56 am (UTC)Some people said Rukia was a geisha because of the hair ornaments. In the taiga drama Atsuhime had the identical hair loop Rukia has in the pic.

Date: 2010-10-28 03:47 am (UTC)THIS. I absolutely agree with your opinion. If her (true) fans really understand her character, they won't mind with everything she got lately. They would be proud their character was portrayed someone who called as the greatest (woman) novelist. But, instead, there are some people who always wants her as the mate of someone else (in this case, samurai's wife? LOL). Why she couldn't stand for her-own self?

Date: 2010-10-28 04:18 am (UTC)I just got a little sad thinking of that epilogue time-skip. Now I think Sensei's going to do one for sure.
Oh Bleach, don't end!
I want to find out the answers to questions and then again, I don't want to say goodbye to the character (yes, this is why there is fanfic *consoles self*)

Date: 2010-10-28 04:33 am (UTC)But when he does, I'm sure it will be beautiful and brilliant and tie everything up in ways some of us have predicted and some that we haven't. Of course we'll be completely satisfied and yet left wanting more because that's how Kubo-sensei is.
I don't even want to think about the end, since I know I'll weep for days. If Ulquiorra's farewell had me crying for days, and Starrk and Lilinette's's demise made me weepy, and the last chapter's sorrowful goodbye made me feel touched and teary, I can only imagine how hard the end of the series will hit me. But there is always fanfic and fanart and Inuyasha-esque endings where we can imagine Ichigo and Rukia's children starting the cycle over.

Date: 2010-10-28 06:17 am (UTC)Well, since some insisted she's just a geisha may be they should tweet him their explanation though. After all, they sure know about Japanese history more than the natives, ne?

Date: 2010-10-28 11:59 am (UTC)I'm so glad that what we've been saying is true. It proves we should stick to Japaneses fans when we need to recognize the characters ichigo, Rukia and others are supposed to be.
This calendar is gorgeous. I hope I can find it once the manga calendar will be revealed. XD

Date: 2010-10-28 01:00 pm (UTC)Fans on 2ch originally guess Murasaki Shibaku because of the flowers in Orihime's picture are Bletilla striata, or Chinese ground orchids, which are nicknamed "Murasaki Shikibu." They're usually purple, plus "murasaki" means "violet". The flowers look a lot like irises--they still could well be irises depicted in the calendar pic (that is much in dispute with fans who won't let go of a bone) but since Sensei confirmed that the characters in the calendar are historical figures, there hasn't been another historical figure identified for Orihime's picture yet.

Date: 2010-10-28 01:05 pm (UTC)I hope there will be an official proof on this soon.

Date: 2010-10-28 01:28 pm (UTC)Being a writer does not imply you are getting penised regularly, or have obtained your chosen man. So they're not interested in her being a writer. But a samurai wife implies a level of stylized romanticism that is sorely lacking in their day-to-day fictional relationship affairs. Also, it implies sex. Clearly it is better to be a random anonymous samurai waifu <3 <3 <3 getting railed by your autocratic sword-wielding husbando than the writer of the first fictional novel.
The Moral Of The Story: It is worthless to be an accomplished woman/famous historical figure if you can't be a convenient vehicle for romance and/or imaginary sex follies. The Moar You Know (tm).
no subject
Date: 2010-10-28 01:39 pm (UTC)The flowers are the giveaway, as well. Bletilla striata do look a lot like irises, but until fandom identifies a samurai's wife or alternate person who is connected to irises, it seems pointless to insist that Orihime is a generic samurai's wife holding irises for the primary reason of Boys' Day being in May. (It's fun to note that irises are apparently featured in the Boys' Day festival because they look like swords and symbolize the warrior spirit. The holiday was also originally only for boys, and was renamed to "Children's Day" in the late 1940s.)
But apparently, having the calendar be explicitly advertised as the cast representing Japanese historical figures (see as an example Amazon.co.jp's description for it) and then Kubo himself on Twitter verifying that theme - that's all meaningless. Ichigo and the others are just cosplaying in old period clothing, and there's no person they're supposed to represent. So what if Ichigo is modeled after Sakamoto Ryoma's pose, or has a dragon in the background representing the dragon kanji in "Ryoma", or has a wave in the foreground to reprsent that Sakamoto was the "father of the Japanese imperial navy." That's all a mere coincidence - Ichigo's simply cosplaying a random samurai.
One may speculate as to why certain fans aren't happy with Orihime being the author of the first novel in human history, and would rather prefer her to be a generic samurai's wife, but it doesn't take mental gymnastics to arrive at the obvious conclusion.

Date: 2010-10-28 02:53 pm (UTC)Orihime's clothes are pretty obviously from the Heian period. Sleeves, hair style, number of layers (Heian period was known for the absurd number of layers XD) since there are still at least five there for the summer clothing outfit.

Date: 2010-10-28 02:11 pm (UTC)She could possibly be intended as a Geisha. And there's nothing really wrong with that. Geisha are artisans; Geisha aren't 'a fancy prostitute' either-- high-class Geisha did not prostitute themselves--that's a (mostly) a western narrow minded and incorrect view I'm afraid. Some questionable practices occurred, but the actual relationship between Geisha and patron is much much more complicated than that.
I can see how anti-Rukia fans (even Japanese ones) might capitalize on the fact that Geisha were namely for entertaining men, but they did so through art, music and conversation and were very respected artisans of their crafts. Geisha literally means means arts person. Furthermore, they were deemed very intelligent--you would talk to Geisha about worldly matters that wives would not understand. So it's not really an insult. If anything, if Rukia is the Geisha and Orihime is the Samurai's wife, then Rukia is in a much better position. They were the only truly independent working women of the time, able to own their own businesses (tea houses) and even marry (but give up Geisha status). Where a wife would be subjected to walking behind her husband, Geisha did not.
Having said that, in my opinion the robes and head-pieces are too fancy for a Geisha. Only young apprentice Geisha (Maiko) did the full regalia-- Geisha were less fancy, using more subdued kimono, headpieces and no face paint or top knot. So, if she's a Maiko she would have had face paint, and she doesn't. So I think she's actually Atsuhime-- fancy regalia, without the face paint. Also, if they are historical figures, then it fits. It doesn't make sense to me otherwise.
Sorry for the long winded post. But it kinda bugs me when people paint Geisha with the same brush as prostitute without having an understanding about the 'flower and willow world' which really wasn't as simplistic as just 'they offered their virginity up and they entertained men for money and probably slept with them'. Sorry. =x

Date: 2010-10-28 02:45 pm (UTC)Ah, sorry for the insult against geisha then. Historically I see nothing wrong with the role or anyone being portrayed as such but comments in fandom comparing Rukia to a prostitute or emphasizing her "receiving men" because of this calendar portrait did bother me.

Date: 2010-10-28 07:49 pm (UTC)But yeah, Rukia looks so painfully like AtsuHime in the drama, there's no doubt they used the recent drama as visual so that the fans would link them together on the spot. Seriously, denying it is like living in lalaland or something (or really hate the fact that Rukia is shown as a very loved princess).
