I'm thinking the baiting of Isshin is less likely, although it's likely he'll show up anyway.
The Aizen control theory still stands, IMO. If no one know's they're under Aizen's control, it'd be easy to get them to do what he wants.
And there's always the possibility that SS is just flat out run by incompetent fools. *facepalm* I mean, I get that this is shounen, and placing all of your hopes on the shoulders of an overpowered teenager is common, but even Ichigo know's he's screwed.
Did I or did I NOT say that any fight with Yammy would be slapstick-a-licious? His getting his fingers cut off! And that panel of Ken-chan lunging at his face! PRICELESS!
Like I said at BA, people can rag on Kubo-sensei all they want for his pacing but as those of us who read the very dialogue-heavy script know now, there's so much more to the story than what happens--Kubo's art tells so much. The perspective on that funky ceremony to open the garganta is so interesting and then we zoom in on Ichigo's goof face and Mayuri's furious eyeball--that's just so FUNNY.
Then there's all the drama of ebil ebil ebil Mayuri and who knows what he's planning with those bodies. Nemu's banal promise to make Ichigo look back fondly on the war (Hooooo!) and wow, I just live for Nii-sama's sidelong glances...
The closing panels were full of ominous stuff. I loved it... so much more than yeehah, here comes the hero to save the day--more like, WATCH ICHIGO EFF THIS UP, AND OMG WHAT COULD MAYURI BE PLANNING (and could Byakuya's eyelashes BE any prettier? <3)
I confess, Debbie, I EWWWWWWED when I saw the fingers come off. >.> but yah, looks like Yammy isn't getting a Srs Bizness fight, and I'm glad for that.
Oh, I think Mayuri does want his evil back. Whatever he's planning with those bodies, I both eagerly anticipate and dread.
Byakuya is the prettiest character in Bleach. He can out-pretty himself, but it's difficult, even for him.
Sorry, I just got distracted by your icon and drooled on my keyboard *grin* (have been watching far too much RMB and it always makes me laugh seeing Byakuya dancing *grin*)
I loved Mayuri's temper tantrum and Bya just treating him like a naughty child *lol*
Ha, ha, those things used to set up the garganta on the first page look ridiculously like those checkmark things you had to hit in sonic the hedgehog.
Other than that, I don't really have much to say about this chapter. That Ichigo's the only one who can fight? pssha. I can't believe it. After the total beatdown he received from first Ulqui (before going pyscho) and then Yammi? I think he's probably going to witness the shikai anyway and then everyone will be *facepalm* we're screwed, and then some Kubo-miracle-fan-mind-splitter will occur.
Well it just goes to show that you can't trust the spoilers. I had a completely different impression of this chapter than what it was.
For one thing, I'm less convinced that Ichigo will get destroyed. At the very least I think he will retain his immunity to kyoko suigetsu whatever happens.
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! Here I am eagerly anticipating Ichigo's failure, but the lower-right panel on this page:
http://www.onemanga.com/Bleach/381/02/
*cries* ICHIBOY, I want to take care of you... (sorry, coddling is not what you need right now.)
This page: http://www.onemanga.com/Bleach/381/07/
*runs screaming into the night*
Uh. Unohana is freaking terrifying. I'm going to say for now that she's complicit in setting Ichigo up for massive failure, in using him as some sort of experiment, something - because those panels of her are very, very cold. She's scary again on 16. Oooh man.
=_= This chapter is a little depressing. There are just so many ways that this is going to hurt Ichigo, and while I'm part of the "this is necessary for Ichigo" camp, urgh, I always feel bad when I actually SEE IT.
Sigh. He's going to eat it and eat it hard, and Kubo is going to be s-l-o-w about it, too.
http://www.onemanga.com/Bleach/381/17/
Byakuya's scarves are like an extension of his hair. Just, look at that flow, that body!

I just submitted a comment - two down (I think) - saying something like this. I should've just read through and agreed with yours, and saved myself some typing, LOL.
But, yeah, I completely agree, they are setting him up for something. I mean: 1)They can detect when someone's spiritual energy changes, therefore there is no way that they don't know - or at least have some idea - of what happened on that dome. 2)They know Ichigo will do anything to protect and that he won't turn them down if they ask. 3)They know Aizen is a conniving bastard and that he doesn't have to speak to release his shikai. With just those in mind, how can they not be setting him up in some way?
I still want to know how the blue fuck Ichigo is going to fight Aizen? Blindfolded? I guess the endless bandages he generates out of thin air will finally find a practical use.
KUBO, WHERE IS MY RUKIA!? Seriously, not even a reaction shot...
I love Unohana like oxygen loves hydrogen, but Ichigo cannot defeat Aizen. Look at that boy's face - look at his eyes, even he knows it. But he's going to go along with it even if it means he breaks (in every and any capacity) because that's what every one wants of him, what they expect of him. And the captains know that too. They are playing him.
And that's why, somehow, and I'm aware this is craktastic, I get the feeling that SS is planning to offer Ichigo up in some way in an attempt to get an advantage over Aizen.
Last but not least: I know there are those here attached to Mayuri, but I never liked him and every time he shows up I like him even less. If the shinigami should suffer casualties I want him to be one of them.
"I know there are those here attached to Mayuri, but I never liked him and every time he shows up I like him even less. If the shinigami should suffer casualties I want him to be one of them."
This I agree with whole-heartedly. But. I want Aizen to die first because I hate that man with the burning of 10 O type stars in main sequence.
Unohana speaks of 'Urahara's group'. Who exactly does she include in that? Just Tessai and the two kids or the Vizards as well? When and how were all the Vizards exposed to Aizen's shikai?
Also what about Isshin? When would he have been exposed?
That's the crux with characters stating things as absolute but the reader goes 'hu?' instead.

Aha. My reaction exactly. Who does she mean?
Maybe it's assumed when Aizen pulled his little hollowfication stunt he had to have revealed? Or since they were part of SS, Aizen has this whole yearly display of manliness to the new recruits whereby everyone gets to know.
(Look, my shikai, my bankai. Lol illusion my new pawns har har)
... How does she know about Urahara's group exactly? Is there constant communication? The Vizards showed up as a surprise didn't they? Hm. Or clearly Unohana knows everything and pwns everyone.
Isshin. Yes. But she doesn't know about him does she?
Why did I not see this post earlier? Goes to show big picture posts block all others.
Anyways, as I said in the other Ichigo has been looking so young, innocent, and beautiful in these latest chapters. It will be interesting ot see what happens next.
Anyways, as I said in the other Ichigo has been looking so young, innocent, and beautiful in these latest chapters.
I think this is an important point. What have we seen of Ichigo lately? He's either been an inhuman monster or looking like a naive little boy. This all points to impending epic fail.
This kid is going to get his ass freaking handed to him. I want to cry. I agree with Karenai. It really does seem like the Captains are all setting up this dumbass for a fail doesn't it? While it was startling to see Unohana so cold, on the other hand...if someone's been a captain for 200+ years, there's got to be a lot of coldness and heartlessness in order for them to retain that position without croaking. Look at Shunsui. Cold blooded killer even if he doesn't particularly like it. It wouldn't surprise me if Juushiro, as well, has a pretty nasty unsavory side to. And we already can guess about Yamamoto.
The spoilers turned out the way I thought, there's definitely a dark undertone to everything the captains are saying. Obviously Kenpachi doesn't care since he's too busy being fight-tastic, but Mayuri, Byakuya, and Unohana, they're more...of the thinking types. I think it's pretty clear that all the captains were banking on the possibility that Ichigo hasn't seen this thing. So he's merely a pawn. Nice one, guys. Or well, this will bite you all in the ass, too. Since you're relying on a cocky teenager who's hiding serious problems. But I get the feeling that all of them know it, too.
This all leads to the big issue: has Ichigo really not seen the shikai? Just remembering that fight makes it hard for me to believe he didn't. And I highly doubt Kubo is going to make Ichigo have special immunity powers to Kyouka Suigetsu because it would be lame, and after all of the hoo-hah over "something's not right with me" Ichigo, not having that come into play is just poor writing.
Also. Ichigo totally was snarking Mayuri on purpose. XD
If the captains are plotting to use Ichigo somehow, then sending four captains to Hueco Mundo makes a lot more sense. They didn't go to help rescue Orihime or even the group. They went specifically to get Ichigo back. (Well, maybe Rukia and Renji being there too had something to do with it.)
I've never quite trusted Soul Society, and this makes me a bit worried for Ishida, Orihime and Chad, especially now that Unohana's gone and Mayuri's still there.
Oh I love chapters were there is more talking than fighting! Though I still hated how Unohana said Ichigo was the only one able to beat Aizen...I just did't like it. We all know it's inevitable but still, for it to be stated by Unohana of all people...D:
I loved Byakuya and Mayrui's exchange, I wish we had more exchanges between captains. I'm just glad Byakuya is back in the manga! Of course I also love the appearance of the other captains too (especially Mayuri).
Wonder when Urahara and 'his group' are going to come? Now that another Gargamta is open...what could Urahara be doing?
I tend to like the talking chapters better than the fighting chapters, so I'm glad we got so much convo and explanation.
I'm glad -- and a little jittery -- that Mayuri is back to being amoral and creepifying.
I'm not sure I can say I've actually 'enjoyed' the chapters since we came back to HM. I'm glad we're back in HM, I loved seeing Rukia and all the interactions, but to be honest? Since the moment Ichigo broke this vow -- http://www.onemanga.com/Bleach/285/19/ -- and said he'd leave his nakama there and go back to FKT, I have felt this overwhelming sense of wrongness. I don't know what's going to happen, but my gut tells me it's going to be bad and it's going to awful to watch. It's almost like watching someone say 'I'm going down to the cellar' in a horror movie only even worse, because Bleach isn't supposed to be a horror movie so the 'bad thing' isn't going to be some ghost or crazy guy with a chainsaw. It's going to be worse.
Right now I'm just in a "God, Kubo, whatever you're going to do to Ichigo, PLEASE do it and get it over with!" Still loving Bleach, but the sense of overshadowing dread is making it hard to enjoy.
I really do not quite understand Unohana's logic. She says that everybody else might have seen Aizen's zanpakutou, so Aizen has control over them? Is the condition of Kyouka Suigetsu that you only have to see it once in your entire lifetime for Aizen to be able to control you whenever? Ehhh, confused. *Blames poor memory*
I would love to know what's going on in Byakuya's head. So he doesn't completely believe in Ichigo's abilities, eh? (Well, I don't either at this point, but the other captains seem to.) Kenpachi himself points out that Ichigo gets beaten up everywhere he goes and needs the captains to bail him out, but they send him to FKT to go after AIZEN? Something doesn't make sense here.
And wait a minute, Ichigo jumps into the garganta without even a goodbye to Rukia, who is still lying injured somewhere??
Interesting chapter, nevertheless. I do enjoy talking chapters more than fighting chapters.
I hate it too, but Rukia's the one he couldn't quite look in the eye, remember?
Despite that big grin on Ichigo's face when he leaps into the garganta, I suspect this is really a case of "Hmm, do I stay here and deal with my friends and face what I've done when I lost control of my Hollow, or do I go bash something? BASH!"
Nothing really exciting other than snarkiness from Mayuri. Y'all know he's got those bodies in there and he's ready to play....
I still think Kubo is phasing out the nakama slowly...Renji and Chad aren't healed yet, who the hell knows what's up on the Dome with Ishida and Orihime and Ichigo doesn't even bother saying goodbye to the one person whom he's probaly closest out of all of them.
After getting over the obvious 'Plot Twist, Incoming' feeling, I couldn't help but get distracted over Ichigo's magical disappearing/reappearing arm bandages.
Is Ichigo being manipulated right now, only to be brought crashing back into reality in a most terrible fashion later on... or are we simply overestimating Kubo and this will indeed turn into a stereotypical "The hero finds a burst of inspiration and overcomes the impossible odds and pulls of a victory"? I can't say I know for sure, or that it's going to be easy to tell which is which. On the other hand, having a confidence booster may be a good way to "redeem" Ichigo in the eyes of those who look down upon his failure to fight Yammy. But on the other hand, there seems to be so many interesting hints that this is not to be...
I suppose all that we can do right now, is to sit back and wait for the conclusion.
Also, Kenpachi is not just Chuck Norris: he is also Spider-man. You read it here first.
There is NO WAY Ichigo can win. Aizen has to torment us with his "Just as I planned" face for at least two more arcs. The only question is HOW BADLY is Ichigo going to lose and how...
is he going to take out any Shinigami with him when he goes IchiThing again? Will his dad save him in the nick of time?
I would pay money to know what's going on in Ichigo's head right now. I adore the boy, I really do. And I have enjoyed seeing him look less distressed in recent chapters after seeing him lose his sanity on the dome. But what in the hell is he thinking? How can anyone possibly make the argument that he came to HM to rescue Orihime after he is so easily persuaded to leave his nakama? He doesn't even give any of them a second thought before he agrees to go back to Karakura. When nii-sama tells him to leave, all he has to say is "beating this guy comes first"?! I recognize that Byakuya plays the "duty to your town" card, but all things considered, the captains were able to swoop in pretty quickly and manage to change his course completely in a matter of minutes. Which begs the questions that everyone has been asking, what the hell are the captains up to?
This will not end well. This chapter was so overwhelmingly ominous. I don't think I've ever seen so many panels devoted just to eyeballs in a single chapter (10!). I really don't think Ichigo is this dense. He can't be. His clothes are literally hanging off of him in tatters. I don't know about anyone else, but this page does not convince me that he feels resolute and confident: http://www.onemanga.com/Bleach/381/19/
To me he looks really unsure, but maybe that's just me. I guess all we can do is sit back and wait for his inevitable failure and for Rukia to come and pick him back up again and whip his ass into shape **crosses fingers**
On another completely random note, I am loving all of the references to Urahara lately just for the sake of pissing people off (Soi Fon, Mayuri). Kubo-sensei's been dropping his name a lot lately, he's gotta show up soon.

Maybe we should retitle this arc Waiting for Urahara. Lots of HM felt like a whole lot of nothing, anyway :P. Okay, I'm mostly kidding there. But seriously, the Grimmjow fight...
Lol, I'm so annoyed that Ichigo got to one-up Mayuri and make him angry, while Ishida got to have comic relief times with the man. Boobs in face! Imbecile! Ignored! And, of course, Mayuri's the guy who... tortured and slaughtered 1000+ Quincy, including his grandfather.
Aaaannd though it's not surprising that Ichigo as the shounen hero has the Aizen job, they sort of need a better reason, since more people haven't seen it-- Ryuuken, Kon, Orihime (maybe), Chad, Uryuu, maybe Isshin, eeetcccc.
Recently I have really been hoping for Zangetsu to knock some sense back into Ichigo so with this chapter I'm even more excited for the possibility. Well the desire for this was amplified more by the substitute badge sketches, but come on Ichigo you don't even try to understand two very big part of your own soul.
The emotion on the last page is perfect the first panel Ichigo has this excellent combination of urgency and uncertainty. Then you have Unohana which with the dialogue of the chapter is being seen in a negative light but she looks surprised and remorseful. Then Mayuri carries this apathetic appearance with undertones of irritation for relying on Ichigo, and we get a worried Nii-sama. The fear in that last panel of Ichigo is so spot on lying just under the surface like he is trying to hide it and we know what the real fear is. Sorry pointless breakdown.
This chapter was definitely full of good emotion, and a big step to moving the story along which makes it all that much better. Ichigo is going to fail so bad and it will be this odd bittersweet sensation when he hits rock bottom. Odd rambling, Unohana is so elegantly scary my jaw dropped just a little.
Unohana is so elegantly scary my jaw dropped just a little.
I know. It's just one of the many damn fine drawings. The facial expressions are primo. Ichigo looks so young and vulnerable. Everyone else looks so knowing.
I just love the way the words flow in this chapter; Mayuri's "What?" turns into Ichigo's somewhat stunned "What?!" (And back again, evidently) But... the one that got me was Ichigo's "I will defeat Aizen" which then cut back to Mayuri saying "Ridiculous. Those are not words I expected to hear from you..." How obvious does it have to be?
Just... the parallel conversations are just spectacular. Or perhaps I'm just easily impressed, haha. But still, hooray for dark undertones.

Date: 2009-11-05 06:38 pm (UTC)I loved Byakuya and Mayrui's exchange, I wish we had more exchanges between captains. I'm just glad Byakuya is back in the manga! Of course I also love the appearance of the other captains too (especially Mayuri).
Wonder when Urahara and 'his group' are going to come? Now that another Gargamta is open...what could Urahara be doing?

Date: 2009-11-05 08:38 pm (UTC)I'm glad -- and a little jittery -- that Mayuri is back to being amoral and creepifying.

Or something will happen to his friends.

Date: 2009-11-05 10:03 pm (UTC)I really do not quite understand Unohana's logic.

Date: 2009-11-05 11:05 pm (UTC)Despite that big grin on Ichigo's face when he leaps into the garganta, I suspect this is really a case of "Hmm, do I stay here and deal with my friends and face what I've done when I lost control of my Hollow, or do I go bash something? BASH!"

Date: 2009-11-05 10:12 pm (UTC)I still think Kubo is phasing out the nakama slowly...Renji and Chad aren't healed yet, who the hell knows what's up on the Dome with Ishida and Orihime and Ichigo doesn't even bother saying goodbye to the one person whom he's probaly closest out of all of them.

Also, Kenpachi is not just Chuck Norris: he is also Spider-man. You read it here first.

Date: 2009-11-06 02:12 am (UTC)LOL, Ken-chan as the Spider Man!

Date: 2009-11-06 01:56 am (UTC)This will not end well.

Date: 2009-11-06 02:25 am (UTC)Maybe we should retitle this arc Waiting for Urahara. Lots of HM felt like a whole lot of nothing, anyway :P. Okay, I'm mostly kidding there. But seriously, the Grimmjow fight...

Date: 2009-11-06 04:49 am (UTC)Aaaannd though it's not surprising that Ichigo as the shounen hero has the Aizen job, they sort of need a better reason, since more people haven't seen it-- Ryuuken, Kon, Orihime (maybe), Chad, Uryuu, maybe Isshin, eeetcccc.

Date: 2009-11-06 09:57 am (UTC)The emotion on the last page is perfect the first panel Ichigo has this excellent combination of urgency and uncertainty.

I know. It's just one of the many damn fine drawings. The facial expressions are primo. Ichigo looks so young and vulnerable. Everyone else looks so knowing.

But still, hooray for dark undertones.
