Re: fanservice Depends of your definition of fan service. One could argue that Matsumoto character design was fan service even though her character is a rich developed one. I think Kubo draws more beautifully when the story interests him. UlqiOri being a hot pair right now in Japan may have spurred the exhanged glance (and the slap!! As much as I loved I thought it was odd for Hime at the time and unnecessary to warming up the Ulqui/Orihime relationship) but if it didn't, Ulquiorra was interesting to Kubo from the beginning--so much so that he had to redraw a cover page featuring Ulqui for a volume.
I love to watch artists get better over time. Kubo started off good and now he takes my breath away.
Re Ichigo. He said himself early in the manga that he studies a lot and does well. But particularly when surrounded by minds like Ishida's, Urahara's, Ulquiorra's, he looks like a simpleton. He's not of course, but in typical shounen hero archetype (Goku et al)his intelligence is instictive--he doesn't think and that sometimes is a great benefit in a fight!
Ulquiorra--oh yes yes I agree. Orihime's going make him turn "good" even if it's for one moment at the end of the arc when he betrays Aizen and dies dramatically. I too have noticed he hasn't killed anyone--when that happens in a shounen, the bad guy turns out to be not so bad. I just hope Ulqui doesn't die. :(
