What's plain to me is that Kubo intended the two arcs to be parallel and that he intended to use the "damsel in distress" quest twice for his shounen adventures.
Now, how does Kubo, the hip young manga-ka who is NOT A SEXIST, re-frame the archetypical quests? We're just going to have to see. Rukia was given a battle recently in which she championed herself. Tsubaki, the one sixth of Orihime that IS A FIGHTER, has yet to be heard from. Literary convention and shounen law demand his triumphant return. Orihime will be fine..... ^^
