There are admittedly few cases in which a mangaka seems to do things only because of the "What do you mean it is not awesome" factor.
Example: Hellsing.
But as cracktastic as that fandom is (and let me assure you, it is, nobody's driven to existential angst or to haranguing on a soapbox about how OMG WALTER AND SERAS ARE SO OTP AND WALTER BEING EVIL ALSO MADE HIM YOUNGER AND MOAR AWESOME (or WalterxCaptain, or...). Why?
Easy. To some people they put certain plot twists out of their minds. (More common example: come on, who put some of the plot and details of the Star Wars trilogies out of their minds? You know what I'm talking about.) No problem.
Speculating is fun, and it's self-satisfying to guess right on something. But yes, there's always the "work with what the mangaka gave you" adage that 4chan so kindly reminds us of.
