Renji looked up to his captain for his strength, wishing to surpass him one day. But after he had tripped on his tongue yet again as he tried to think of a retort to a particular sneering comment by Ikkaku –and how hard could that be against a man who wears eye shadow!?– Renji found himself wishing for some of his taichou’s eloquence as well.
Really, anyone who was stupid enough to try and mock Byakuya in any way would end up speechless and cowering. The redhead knew this from experience, both personal and as a bystander.
So when he entered the 6th division he was determined to figure out how his captain could make men quiver in their shoes without much effort.
“...Taichou?”
Byakuya looked up from his paperwork to pin the redhead with a grey gaze. “Yes, Renji?”
As Renji actually stood next to his captain’s desk, his brilliant idea started to feel a little silly.
“Ehm.. I was just wondering.. eh..”
If he ever did get the words out, his captain would certainly understand that unveiling the secret of shutting people up would certainly be in his vice-captain’s favour.
Finally he blurted out, “Howcanyoumakepeopleregretwhattheyweresayingsoeasily?”
And promptly wished he hadn’t.
Byakuya seemed to resist the urge to blink at the tidal wave of words coming his way and calmly took a few seconds to decipher his vice-captain’s sentence as Renji fidgeted.
However, even as Byakuya nodded slightly to signal he understood Renji’s message, the noble kept silent.
After a few more moments of fidgeting on Renji’s side and silent staring on his captain’s side, the redhead caved and started babbling again.
“Ehm never mind... I was just.. eh yeah...”
“Like this, Renji.”
The redhead blinked as his captain cut him off. When he blinked some more, Byakuya decided to continue.
“Over the years I have surmised that the best way to silence people... is to provide them with the proper example.”
“...You mean, just stay silent?” Renji asked, feeling a little shocked that he was actually getting an answer.
Byakuya nodded and lightly added, “Glaring might help to acquire the proper effect”.
And with that final tip the captain of the 6th division went back to his paperwork, silently dismissing his vice-captain, who managed to mutter a ‘thank you’ as he busied himself with this piece of information.
He would try it out on Ikkaku tonight. Hell, maybe even Yumichika. A silent Renji would be enough to shock anyone.
