The over burden of protagonists. Yeah, I agree Bleach suffers severely because of it...but you know, I don't think the problem is the number of protagonists simply, but what I've seen written about as the author not wanting to let go of the fact that we don't need the life stories of every single one of them. Yes, it's great that he thought them out so well that they're each an individual person with needs and wants, but the story drags when you have to go through each of them to give them screen time. He needs to let go a bit, in addition to focussing more on the villains. It becomes pretty obvious who he really likes...I think he must have liked Ulquiorra a lot to want to devote so much character to him. XD But seriously, it shouldn't be that way.

Honestly, a lot of these arcs could have been cut down to a manageable and more exciting length if KT just left some characters out because, well, they're minor characters. And minor characters are great...for the very virtue that they're a minor character. Not everyone can be a main character. An overburdened story being the reason why. The Fraccion fights could have been cut, much of the slog through HM could've been pared down to the most important fights, Aaroniero, Grimmjow, and Ulquiorra. Yeah, I know that cuts out the other Espada, but things were dragging even though it did manage to make them deeper characters. The fights between the top three and the Captains could've been paced better to show the difficulty of fighting the Espada while not having the Captains completely owned. It's just been frustrating so far because it's clear that KT seems to be willing to shaft the villains (outside the Big 3). I really would like to see some more of the remaining Espada...I mean Barragan for instance can't get anymore dull, can he??

Good work on the essay, I enjoyed reading it and agreed with it. =) Personally, when I write, I try to think be both the character and the world builder writer. I've always found it a good thing to think about the antagonist as being a person as well in order to create a more well-rounded antagonist. And yeah, there will be unsympathetic villains and the like, but I think the most important part if the why. If there's no satisfactory answer to the "why?" then you end up with stock villains that people just want to be taken care so we can get to the real plot. >_>
