Actually, knowing something's name and having power over it seems to be quite common in anime/manga. Ever see Spirited Away? The dragon and other souls are searching for their lost names, only able to be free once they remember them. I've seen quite a few supernatural animes where the way to defeat a demon was to learn its name. And then of course, are all those named-attacks in fighting animes.
